Trains are quiet, modern, with luggage racks. £25 one-way if booked online in advance, £32 walk-up. Genuinely the fastest single-mode option for getting from T5 to central London.
The catch: Paddington isn't most people's actual destination. From Paddington you typically need a Tube transfer (Bakerloo, Circle, Hammersmith & City, District) to your real destination — adding 15-30 minutes plus another £3-6 fare. For a Bayswater hotel that's fine. For Canary Wharf, Knightsbridge or the City of London, the total time is similar to a direct taxi but at a higher total cost when you include the onward Tube.
3. Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) — the new best-value option
The Elizabeth Line opened the Crossrail tunnel through central London in May 2022 and now serves all four Heathrow terminals including T5. From T5: 32 minutes to Bond Street, 36 minutes to Tottenham Court Road, 38 minutes to Liverpool Street, 45 minutes to Canary Wharf. 4. Piccadilly Line — the cheapest, slowest, full London experience
The Piccadilly Line is the original Underground service to Heathrow, opened in 1977. From T5: 50-60 minutes to Piccadilly Circus, 55 minutes to Knightsbridge, 65 minutes to King's Cross. Trains are crowded, lift-access is variable, luggage racks are minimal. But it's £5.60 off-peak via contactless — the cheapest direct option from T5.
Choose Piccadilly Line only if budget is the priority, you have light hand luggage, and your destination is on the Tube map. For families, business class, or anyone with hold luggage, the Elizabeth Line is comparable in cost and significantly better experience.
5. Black cab metered (last resort)
London black cabs queue at the T5 taxi rank. No pre-booking needed, no app, just walk up. The same physical route from T5 to central London takes wildly different amounts of time depending on when you leave. Plan your travel time around these patterns:
- Early morning (05:00-07:00): Fastest road conditions. Taxi 35-45 minutes. Trains run from 05:30.

Long-haul flights routinely arrive at 22:30-02:00 UK time. If your scheduled landing is after 22:00, pre-book a taxi — by the time you clear customs and baggage, all train services may have stopped, leaving the rank queue or surge-priced ride-share as your only options.
Going the Other Direction — Central London to T5
The same five routes work in reverse for departures, with two important differences:
- Buffer matters more. If you miss your departure, the consequences are larger than missing a connection on arrival. Always allow 3 hours from pickup to long-haul departure, 2.5 hours for short-haul international, 2 hours for domestic.
