Gatwick has four distinct vehicle zones around the North Terminal building. Picking the wrong one costs you money (fines start at £100) or 20 minutes of walking. Here's exactly what each zone is for:
The primary pickup zone for friends, family and private collectors. Sits directly opposite the North Terminal arrivals hall, connected by a covered walkway with travelators. ANPR-controlled — pay on exit, no paper tickets. Pricing as of 2026: £3 for the first 30 minutes, £6 for 30-60 minutes, £10 for 1-2 hours. The 30-minute slot is enough for almost any flight if the passenger has already cleared customs and called from the terminal.
The dedicated ride-share pickup zone. Uber, Bolt, Free Now, Ola and other licensed Private Hire Vehicles (PHV) collect only from here — they are not permitted on the arrivals forecourt. When you order an Uber from inside North Terminal arrivals, the GPS pin shows the AVA, not the building exit. Walk via the covered walkway (4-6 minutes); lift access for trolleys.
Directly outside the arrivals doors, on the ground floor. Licensed Gatwick taxis only — these are the white Skoda Octavias of Airport Cars Gatwick (the licensed concession). Fares are metered; a typical North Terminal-to-central-London trip runs £85-£130 vs our fixed £75. Queue length varies from instant (mid-afternoon weekday) to 25 minutes (Friday 6pm and Sunday 9pm long-haul waves).
The free drop-off area on the upper departures level. Critical: this is for drop-off only, not pickup. The maximum stay is 10 minutes, enforced by ANPR on entry and exit. Stop here to collect a passenger and you will receive a £100 penalty notice. Drivers waiting for a passenger should use Short Stay Car Park 1.
For travellers who parked in Long Stay, a free shuttle bus loops between Long Stay and the North Terminal forecourt every 10-15 minutes. The shuttle stop is on the lower forecourt, immediately right of arrivals as you exit. Not a pickup option for visitors — only for returning Long Stay customers.
The Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink station is directly connected to the North Terminal via a covered walkway (3 minutes from arrivals). If you're connecting via rail rather than road, the station entrance is on the south side of the building between the arrivals hall and Short Stay Car Park 1.
